On 23-24 June 2016, Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools held its first Regional Research Forum in NIS Aktau, NIS Almaty and NIS Petropavlovsk schools bringing together 350 practitioner-researchers from across Kazakhstan. The Forum were also attended by representatives of regional branches of the Orleu National Centres for Excellence, pilot schools, university faculty, and state school principals. The theme of this initial research Forum was ‘Research Capacity Building through Collaborative Networks’.

The Forum’s objectives were to increase the research capacity of the NIS schools, interorganisational cooperation, and experience exchange. NIS actively facilitates teacher-led change and the professionalization of the teaching profession.

The idea of evidence-based practice enjoys considerable support among NIS schoolteachers, largely through the action research and lesson study projects. Integrating these projects into their work helps teachers improve their teaching skills by basing changes in practice on research findings. Through joint planning, observation and discussion of lessons, teachers develop a collaborative environment, reflection on their pedagogy, and the ability to solve authentic teaching problems. To date, more than 900 NIS staff members have been involved in research, working on more than 250 group and individual projects.

With the development of a research culture in the school, the number of teachers presenting their research findings at national and international conferences is growing, thereby fulfilling an essential requirement of any research work, namely sharing research findings. This year, fifteen conference abstract submissions from NIS staff-members were accepted for the European Educational Research Association Annual Conference to be held in Dublin, Ireland.

The Forum programme included active forms of peer education and discussion, masterclasses, practical trainings, presentations at the sessions, and the presentation of research results through a poster session. Cooperation is focused on building active dialogue to exchange experiences and find answers to challenging questions encountered in the process of teaching and learning.
